Telemedicine FAQ's
Why is Barnside offering telemedicine?
Telemedicine isn’t about replacing visits to the hospital. It’s about complementing those services and establishing a means to monitor patients and communicate with clients using modern telecommunication tools. You are always welcome to call and schedule an appointment, but we hope you will appreciate the flexibility of a telemedicine consultation when appropriate.
What is Barnside@Home?
Barnside@Home is a virtual veterinary consultation that connects Barnside Veterinary Hospital doctors with clients through convenient messaging services. No special app required!
How much does a virtual exam cost?
$60
How many problems can be addressed during the virtual consultation?
This charge is per problem. Some problems are able to be resolved via text messaging augmented by photos or videos, while other problems may require a phone call or video conference. The doctor assigned to your consultation will determine the best way to resolve your problem. If you have additional problems that you would like to have addressed, you can either schedule another virtual consultation or call for an in-person comprehensive physical exam and evaluation at Barnside.
What if my problem cannot be fully addressed via the virtual consultation and results in my having to schedule an office visit for a physical exam?
If you start with a virtual consultation and the doctor feels that the problem is best addressed with an actual physical exam, you will receive a $25 credit toward your pet's exam with a Barnside veterinarian.
When will I be charged?
You will enter your payment information at the time you request the virtual consultation.
If my pet has not been examined by a Barnside Veterinarian within the past year, can I still use Barnside@Home?
Yes, but the doctor will not legally be able to diagnose or prescribe medications until they have performed a physical exam on your pet. When issuing guidelines, the American Veterinary Medical Association considers technological advancements, available research, as well as state and federal regulations. The AVMA states that veterinary telemedicine, like conventional veterinary medicine, should only be conducted within an existing Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR), with the exception of advice given in an emergency until that patient can be seen by a veterinarian.
The New Jersey Veterinary Board and the AVMA’s Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics require a VCPR for a veterinarian to diagnose, prescribe medication, or otherwise treat an animal. This requires us to have examined your pet within the last year.
If I am not a client at Barnside Veterinary Hospital, can I still use Barnside@Home?
Yes, but according to the AVMA, if a VCPR does not exist, the veterinarian or any other veterinary care professional can only offer general advice that is not specific to a particular patient. It should not include diagnosing, prognosis, or therapeutics.
When can I use Barnside@Home?
Barnside veterinarians are available for telemedicine consultations 7 days a week from 10:00am -10:00pm.
Our doctors have a typical response time of 1-2 hours.
I have an emergency, can I use Barnside@Home?
No, Barnside@Home is not for emergencies! If a situation is life threatening, you should call Barnside for guidance or immediately take your pet to the nearest emergency center.
